TANGERANG: More than 4,000 people in Pajang subdistrict in Tangerang municipality are to be moved and their lands used for the expansion of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
"The subdistrict will be taken out of the map," administration spokesman Saiful Rohman said Wednesday.
Along with Pajang residents, hundreds of families from the Batu Ceper and Benda districts will also be gradually evicted for the project, he added.
A new terminal will be built on the 63-hectare Pajang area.
Tangerang mayor Wahidin Halim said the relocation mean noise pollution from the airport no longer affected the residents.
"We are currently still collecting accurate data on the number of residents, existing buildings and land to be cleared," he said, adding that the data would be handed to airport operator PT Angkasa Pura.
He said a study was underway to find a new location for the evicted residents. -- JP
