BANDUNG, West Java: At least 20 percent of Java's 4,000 kilometers of railway tracks is out of order, said the president of state railway company PT Kereta Api Ronny Wahyudi on Wednesday.
The condition of the tracks has recently led to many railway accidents and Ronny emphasized the importance of the much-needed repairs.
"Repair of the railway tracks is a must to prevent (further) accidents," he said.
The Ministry of Transportation will be fully responsible for the repairs and it is expected the works will be completed by next year, he said.
Without giving any details on the figures, Ronny said the frequent accidents had caused his company to suffer losses.
In the first three months of this year alone, for example, the firm failed to reach its income target, he said.
Ronny said the company was forced to spend funds on damaged infrastructure.
