Four busway mechanics were severely injured when a TransJakarta bus burst into flames during maintenance at the bus pool on Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.
The four victims, Samim, 36, Sulaiman, 22, I Gusti Ketut Alid, 50, and Nurah, 29 were rushed to the nearby Mediros hospital, with most of them suffering burns to around 40 percent of their bodies.
The mechanics doing welding work on the bus, which normally plies the Pulogadung-Harmoni route, while disposing of its gas tank.
One of the victims, Samin, said he had no idea what had caused the explosion.
"(The explosion) came from under the bus, but I have no idea where the fire started exactly."
None of the men were smoking when the accident happened, he said.
A TransJakarta spokesman, Daryono, said the bus was in for regular maintenance.
"We usually replace the gas tank once every three months," Daryono told the news portal Tempointeraktif.com.
