JAKARTA: In a plenary meeting Thursday, the City Council criticized the busway for adding to traffic by taking up street space for corridors that were unable to operate at full capacity.
Councilors blamed the administration for not demanding busway management purchase more buses to allow corridors to carry more passengers.
"The city administration does not have any strategy to overcome the recurring traffic jams as a result of busway corridors taking up street lanes," councilor Nurmansjah Lubis was quoted by Antara.
Councilors urged the administration to push the busway consortium to purchase more buses for the system, to help alleviate the traffic.
"Bus procurement for corridors 4 to 7 should be completed immediately," Nurmansjah said.
Jakarta Transportation Agency deputy head Udar Pristono earlier said there were only 78 buses operating on the four new corridors, from a planned 112 buses
