TEMPO Interactive, Semarang:The city of Semarang in Central Java will operate the busway transportation system by May 2009. “Construction of the system is still underway,” said Transportation Office chief, Andi Agus Wandono. It will be called the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. According to Agus, the bus system is an effort to improve transportation service in Semarang. The central government is disbursing Rp4 billion to procure the buses, while the provincial government is providing Rp1,5 billion. The Semarang city administration itself has allocated Rp2 billion.
At the initial stage, the Transportation Office will open corridor I, which is the Mangkang-Penganggaron route, with 20 buses. Based on Tempo’s observation, the Transportation Office has begun constructing bus stops in the Mangkang-Penganggaron lane. “We will install 53 shelters there,” Agus said.
The shelters are expected to be completed by the end of December. Currently, 20 buses are still being assembled and their completion will be at the end of January. The other five corridors to be opened are the following routes: Pudakpayung-Terboyo II, Tembalang-Terboyo III, Banyumanik- Tanjung Emas Port IV, Penggaron-Terboyo V and Ahmad Yani Airport –Terboyo VI.
