BRUSSELS, Belgium: The European Union on Wednesday welcomed Indonesia's adoption of a new aviation law, a sign that the bloc may be moving to end its ban on all Indonesian airlines.
Earlier in the day, parliament in Jakarta adopted new legislation imposing tough new safety requirements on commercial air traffic.
"This was one of the elements called for by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and is a significant development for the improvement of air safety in Indonesia," a EU statement said.
In June 2007, the bloc banned all aircraft registered in the Southeast Asian nation from flying within European airspace due to safety concerns caused by a spate of crashes and other mishaps.
But ICAO, the Montreal-based U.N. aviation safety agency, has since urged the EU to relax its ban, saying that Indonesia has implemented a number of measures to improve air safety.
"The European Commission looks forward to discussing ... the implementation of this new law during its regular dialogue with the Indonesian authorities," the statement said.
