Jakarta City Council has proposed the city's Land Transportation Owners Organization (Organda) reduce taxi fares, following the recent gasoline price cut, Tempointeraktif.com reported on Thursday.
The city administration approved the current cab fares -- based on a Rp 6,000 (55 US cents) flag fall, Rp 3,000 per kilometer and a Rp 30,000 waiting fee per hour -- that were proposed by Organda in June this year in line with fuel price increases at that time.
"Now that the government has cut fuel prices, taxis should cut fares accordingly," councilor Aliman Aat, the chairman of council Commission B on economic affairs, said on Thursday.
Aliman said the administration's decree on taxi fares only regulated the highest rate. "So it allows for lower rates. The fares should be 20 percent less than they are now; fares should return to the levels before the increase," he said.
If Jakarta Organda refuses the proposal, the Jakarta Transportation Council would have to find a better solution, Aliman said.
Last week the government cut gasoline prices by Rp 500 (to Rp 5000), the second such cut this month after another Rp 500 cut earlier in December.
Separately, Jakarta Organda chairman Herry Rotti admitted the recent fuel price cuts could affect taxi fares. "But we haven't discussed this yet," he said.
Herry said taxi fares could be reduced by maximum of 5 percent.
"Taxi businesses would deeply object if fares go lower than that," he said. (dre)
