YOGYAKARTA (Jakarta Post): Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has embarked on a healthy environment program by banning motorcycles and cars from entering its operational building compound.
A temporary ban was put in place Saturday and would last until the end of this month, university chairman for human resources and administration Ainun Na'rim said.
"Motorcycles and cars are prohibited from entering the compound from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. We have provided parking spaces around the buildings for all employees, students and guests," Ainun said.
UGM spokesman Suryo Baskoro said the program would be evaluated temporarily before being adopted into university regulations.
"We will run the program to help create a comfortable campus. Many campuses in Europe have banned motorcycles and cars, and we want to apply the same concept here as part of our commitment to preserving clean air around the university," Suryo said.
He said UGM still needed to prepare an in-depth plan for ban, which would need to be approved by the rector. The only vehicles permitted entry to UGM would be for special guests and deliveries, he said.
