JAKARTA (Jakarta Post): Vice President Jusuf Kalla has asked state railway operator Kereta Api (KA) to appoint a special safety director because repeated train accidents have hurt the public image of train travel.
"The vice president has asked PT KA to concentrate on improving its image. He does not want to hear about any more railway accidents or reports of dirty coaches," Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal told detik.com after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Kalla on Wednesday.
Apart from the safety issue, the government is considering establishing a new company to oversee railway service in Greater Jakarta in line with demand, which is expected to increase significantly by 2010.
Jusman predicted there would be 22,450 daily train passengers in Greater Jakarta in 2010. "PT KA is expected to transport 350,000 to 500,000 passengers daily in that year," he said.
