The Transportation Ministry said Tuesday that it would reduce the cost of economy-class train tickets by 5 to 10 percent as fuel price decreases.
The Ministry's train transportation director Wendy Aritenang said that a 5 percent reduction of cost had already been confirmed.
"The 5 percent cut is at hand," she said, adding that the ministry was still studying the possibility of further reductions.
Aritenang previously indicated that state railroad operator PT KA would be ready to reduce transportation cost should the government further reduce fuel prices, an initiative set to materialize as of mid-January.
"PT KA has already verbally expressed its readiness in accomodating reduced fuel costs," she said, as quoted by Antara newswire.
Economy-class train tickets are determined by the government. Business and Executive-class rides, however, are regulated by a government-imposed price ceiling and price floor.
PT KA received a total of Rp 544 billion for economy-class subsidy last year.
Aritenang said the amount would increase to Rp 580 billion this year.
