JAKARTA (Jakarta Post): Deputy Governor Prijanto visited a number of flood gates and water reservoirs Friday to personally check the condition of rivers and availability of working pumps as the wet season approaches.
His first visit was to the Manggarai flood gate, South Jakarta, which helps control the flow of Ciliwung River.
The piles of garbage, logs and household waste that can usually be seen clogging the flood gate heading towards Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, had been dredged by the time the deputy governor arrived.
Prijanto received a report from an on-duty guard who said the river was routinely cleaned and the communication system was operational.
However, upon inspection of the flood gate that channels water towards Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, the deputy governor found piles of garbage blocking the flow of river water.
"I want this gate to be cleared by tomorrow morning," he told Suparman, the head of the water control and conservation division at the City Public Works agency. (Mustaqim Adamrah)
