JAKARTA (Jakarta Post): Jakarta will see more road work next year, with Governor Fauzi Bowo announcing his solution to the chronic traffic problems that plague the capital is to build more overpasses and underpasses.
He said it was the best way to avoid social conflict, as has happened around past construction when land has been compulsorily acquired by the government.
"If horizontal expansion is impossible than we'll do it vertically. Underpasses and overpasses will be a suitable option to ease traffic jams."
The administration, he said, would get the money from city bond issuances and profits made by city-run businesses.
He said the administration was lobbying the government to be allowed to manage the inner-city toll road.
"We can use the profits made from the inner-city toll road's operations to build underpasses and overpasses," Fauzi said. (Mustaqim Adamrah)
