Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government planned to hold a tender for public transportation routes in Indonesia under the Quality Licensing program to be launched this year, an official has said here Tuesday.
The program is aimed at reducing high cost in the public transportation sector and improving the sector itself, Director General for Land Transportation Iskandar Abubakar said after opening a seminar on quality licensing as a breakthrough in public transportation service improvement.
He acknowledged that city and inter-city public transportation service quality had been declining due to fuel oil price hikes and the people`s low financial capacity.
Therefore, in the near future the government would hold a tender for public transportation route from the Soekarno Hatta international airport in Cengkareng, Banten province, to Lampung province, Cikampek area in West Java province and Cirebon city in West Java province.
Meanwhile Land Transportation Traffic Director Soeroyo Alimoeso said the government program on the public transportation mode from the international airport to Bandung city proved to be successful.
Launched on October 10, 2006, the Sukarno Hatta airport -Bandung city transportation mode had carried an average of 1,000 passengers per day.
"The highest number of passengers on the Sukarno Hatta - Bandung transportation mode reached 1,327 on December 22, 2006. It would save 2,073,096 liters of fuel per year, or 5,680 liters per day," he said.
The program, however, was opposed by the Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda) chairman Murphy Hutagalung.
The proposed scheme might kill existing public transportation modes, he said.
The Sukarno Hatta - Bandung transportation mode had utilized only 50 percent of its daily full capacity, he said.
He said taxi and state-owned bus company Damri drivers might stage a protest against the government`s plan.
