TEMPO Interactive, Semarang:Semarang will build special bicycle lanes in 2011, Semarang Mayor Soemarmo Hadi Saputro told Tempo yesterday.
The initial stage of the 7.5 kilometer-long bicycle lane will cover Simpang Lima, Pahlawan, Diponegoro streets and Diponegoro Park. "Later, we will extend them to all major roads," said Soemarno.
The lanes are being built to encourage healthy living in the city and reduce traffic congestion. “There are now many bike-to-work communities," he said.
The government has budgeted Rp150 million for the construction of the new bicycle lanes.
Chief of the Semarang Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) Commission B, Ari Purbono, has suggested that bicycle lanes also be extended to Majapahit, Kaligawe and Mangkang streets. Cyclists already use these streets every morning and evening, he said. “Cyclists have the right to enjoy the street safely,”said Widodo, a cyclist himself.
