The National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) on Tuesday announced that there had been 50 train accidents in Indonesia this year, down from the 82 cases in 2009.
“In 2010,train accidents killed 60 people and injured 189,” KNKT chairman Tatang Kurniadi said in Jakarta, adding that technical matters were the main causes of the accidents.
Of the 50 cases, KNKT had only investigated ten, which were classified as severe accidents, Tatang said.
“For these cases we issued 11 recommendations to the directorate general of trains at the Transportation Ministry and to state railway company PT KA.” He said.
