On Dec. 27 last year, Tangerang municipality officially launched a new-and-improved Jl. Husein Sastranegara as an alternative route to the airport from Serpong and Jakarta -- but motorists have said the new road needs more signage.
The revamp has seen the once-narrow road become a duel carriage highway.
Motorists traveling from the capital can now take the Jakarta-Merak tollroad and enter the inner-city roads of Tangerang municipality.
Those coming from Serpong can reach Jl. MH Thamrin in Tangerang, after Jl. Serpong Raya.
But feedback from motorists is that step-by-step signs are crucial for those unfamiliar with the area.
"I didn't know about the alternative route to the airport because I did not see any road signs along the way," Tangerang resident Budi Kuncahyo said Friday.
Tangerang municipal Transportation Agency head Erlan Ruasnarlan said they had placed a number of traffic signs along alternative roads heading to airport.
But he said the number of signs installed along the alternative routes was inadequate and promised to add some, although he did not provide a definite timeframe.
Airport traffic police chief Adj. Comr. Sutimin said a lack of information about the newly revamped Jl. Pembangunan-Jl. Husen Sastranegara had caused bottlenecks at one intersection in Rawa Bokor.
He said each day there were up to 5,000 vehicles traveling between Rawa Bokor in West Jakarta to the airport.
"The new road was opened on Dec. 27, but the opening was not publicized and so not many people know about it," he said.
