Customs and excise officials at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport seized several boxes packed with cell phones valued at 900 million (US$95,000) and 20 ceramic bulldozers containing liquor this week, an official said.
The office's chief of intelligence, Eko Darmanto, said Wednesday the Hyundai phones were confiscated from a South Korean passenger identified as KTH, who arrived from Incheon on Monday.
"He said the fact the products were not declared on the customs form was not a matter of tax evasion, but was because the brand didn't have a license on the Indonesian market," Eko said.
On the same day, an officer seized the one-liter ceramic liquor containers at the Garuda Cargo Warehouse.
Eko said the liquor, produced by Inwine Agency in Australia, arrived at the airport on Jan. 2 and was only declared as being ceramic models.
Customs officers also seized several boa snakes and tarantulas smuggled into the country from Malaysia on Saturday.
The snakes and spiders were found in a delivery package sent through a cargo company by Soh Lis Shen, a resident of Selangor in Malaysia, to Alex Andrean in Surabaya.
Eko said the contents of the package, which was said to be children's toys, had to the potential to carry diseases from overseas into Indonesia.
"Animal importation must be done through the airport's quarantine agency," he told The Jakarta Post. -- JP
