JEMBER, East Java (Antara): Mudflow from PT Lapindo Brantas gas field in Porong district, Sidoarjo regency has began disrupting train services from East Java capital of Surabaya to nearby town of Banyuwangi, an official says.
Spokesman of State railway operator PT KAI Eko Suminto said Sunday that the trains have to slow down their speed when they passed through railways in Porong, fearing that the dam separating the mud and the railway would collapse.
He also added that two trains could not pass through the area in the same time, causing all trains arrived at stations hours behind their schedules."Mutiara Timur train from Surabaya arrived two hours behind the schedule," Eko was quoted by Antara news agency as saying, adding that the train run some five kilometers per hour.
The mud have been flowing from the gas field since early last year, inundating more than 10,000 houses, dozens of factories, and hectares of agricultural fields.
All efforts, including dropping concrete balls to the mouth of the volcano mud, have been carried out. But it is not successful. Experts say that the mudflow may occur for decades.
