JAKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo appointed Friday four new deputies to help advise him on certain affairs and communicate with the central government.
A 2007 law on Jakarta as the nation's capital stipulates the Jakarta governor must have deputies other than the deputy governor, a city secretary and assistants to the city secretary.
The new deputies are Margani Mustar, who will oversee population and housing; Aurora Tambunan, in charge of tourism and culture; Ahmad Haryadi, for spatial planning and environmental affairs; and Sutanto Soehodho, for trade, industry and transportation affairs.
The deputies will supervise related city agencies, and each will have two assistants.
"I hope the presence of the deputies to monitor the performance of the city's agencies will help improve public services," Fauzi said.
Sutanto said he would advise Fauzi on the development of a suitable mass transportation system for the city.- JP
