A Garuda Indonesia plane with 134 passengers, including 2 children and 2 babies, was about to take off at Polonia Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, when its tires burst on Wednesday, prompting the authorities to close the airport.
All the tires burst when the Boeing 7373-400 plane was about to take off for Jakarta at 9:30 a.m., but no one was injured, the airport's head of operation supervision Robert M. Hutagalung said.
Robert said that the airport would be closed until the plane was towed from the runaway. The airport is redirecting all flights coming into Medan to airports in Pekanbaru and Batam.
At the time of writing, the plane was still at the runaway.
Robert said that the plane's tires were checked prior to its flight from Jakarta to Medan, but the crew did not check them again before the plane's flight back.
