Depok, West Java (ANTARA News) - A bicycle track is currently under construction on the grounds of the University of Indonesia (UI) and expected to be officially opened in March 2008 or on the 100th day of Prof. Gumilar R. Soemantri`s tenure as UI Rector.
"The bicycle track will be the first in Indonesia, especially on campus," Prof. Gumilar R. Soemantri said on Tuesday.
He said the bicycle track was being built according to the "green campus and world class campus" concept.
"This program shows our commitment to addressing global warming issues. Cooperation partners such as companies and industries are also supporting this program," Prof. Gumilar said.
He said the bicycle track would also be complemented with shelters, security posts, parking areas, water containers and 1,000 bicycles.
"The bicycles will be free of charge, and can be borrowed using the UI students` `Smart Card." he said.
Prof. Gumilar said a bicycle track was very important in following a healthy life style.
"Air pollution is at a dangerous level, so UI is trying to promote a healthy campus life style which has already been adopted by a few universities abroad," Gumilar said.
