In efforts to combat the recent hike in traffic accident numbers, Jakarta's police force said it will launch on Friday an operation called "Simpatik Jaya" across 213 areas in the city.
The `sympathetic will see 2,723 personnel used, is set to run until Feb. 24, and should target drivers violating road rules," said police traffic head Sr.Comr. Djoko Susilo on Thursday.
"We also hope this operation will make motorists more disciplined on the streets and will reduce accidents," Djoko said.
City police recorded a monthly average of 52,793 violations and 453 accidents per month on the road last year.
The numbers increased to 52,984 violations and 538 accidents in January.
The operation would also focus on reducing traffic jams at 72 spots around the city, including Jl. Gatot Subroto and Jl. Kramat Raya in Central Jakarta, and Jl. Raya Pasar Minggu and Jl. M.T Haryono in South Jakarta.
The police will also run a campaign around driving discipline in schools, offices and public places.
Djoko said the operation will see police use persuasive tactics when dealing with drivers, rather than immediately providing enforcements or warnings to violators.
"But for violations that may lead to traffic accidents, like reckless driving, we will ticket and fine them," he said.
The operation would involve detectives and intelligence officers.
Djoko said the involvement of other divisions was to overcome road crimes and to prevent police from taking bribes.
There are around 5.5 million vehicles in the city, 98 percent of which are privately owned.
With only 27,340 kilometers of roads, the city experiences severe traffic congestion every working day during peak hours.
Other factors include the fast growth of private vehicle numbers and many unscrupulous police officers, who take bribes to release errant motorists.
The traffic operation is the second transportation-related operation this month. Last week the railway operator company started its train riding discipline campaign, targeting passengers riding on carriage roofs. (dre)
