JAKARTA (Jakarta Post): Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo plans to introduce a “car free day” every month in spite of the failure of the trial run held last month.
Antara quoted the newly installed governor as saying that the light traffic in Jakarta during the Idul Fitri holiday has meant a considerable reduction in air pollution that it convinced him to have the “car free day” more frequently.
Last month, the local government declared the main thoroughfare from Jl. Sudirman to Jl. Thamrin free from car on a Saturday. The trial run was poorly communicated, many people were caught in the situation, and traffic, which was normally light on Saturdays, became heavily congested in Central Jakarta.
“We estimated that 70 percent of air pollution in Jakarta came from vehicle emission,” Fauzi said.
Several residents in Jakarta he met during the Idul Fitri holiday said the air was much friendlier these days because there are fewer cars on the road. “This is simple proof that the fewer cars there are, the cleaner air we get,” he said.
