YOGYAKARTA: Train company PT KAI plans to stop the operation of 16 old train cars to minimize the potential for accidents, the company's spokesman said Thursday.
Spokesman Mochtadi said the company was currently in the process of auditing 111 cars. The audit was expected to be completed this month.
"We plan to stop using 16 cars since they're old and might harm passengers if continued to be used," Mochtadi said.
The 16 cars, he said, were in poor condition, with several suffering light to serious damage. "We're proposing to the company's directors to replace the cars," Mochtadi said.
The Yogyakarta-based company now has 186 train cars, the oldest of which was assembled in 1966 and the newest in the 1990s.
