A piece of plane debris which washed ashorethe island of Reunion at the end of July was confirmed to be a part Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which was reported missing in March 2014, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins announced Thursday.
"We
can confirm with certainty that the flaperon discovered in Reunion on July 29
corresponds to flight MH370," Molins said.
A
technician from Airbus Defense and Space (ADS-SAU) in Spain, which had
manufactured the part for Boeing, had identified one of three numbers found on
the flaperon as being the serial number of the missing plane, he added, putting
an end to one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history.
On Aug. 6,
Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak confirmed that the flaperon belongs to the
Boeing 777, 515 days after it disappeared, while authorities in France cited
"very strong expectations" that it belonged to the craft.
The flight,
a Boeing 777-200, had disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with a
total of 239 passengers on board, most of them Chinese.
