TEMPOInteractive, Jakarta:The chief of the National Flight Safety Commission (KNKT)Tatang Kurniadi said that the condition of airport radars is mostly affected byits maintenance rather than its age.
“Radarsare an electronic device. If it is well maintained and the spare parts arestill available in the market, then it can still function well,” he told Tempowhen asked about the complaints about the radar at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport, yesterday.
Even so,Tatang admitted that radars still have an ideal usage time. “But a radar isexpensive. So as long as you maintain it well, you can still use it. But if youchange it with a new one off course it is better and surely moresophisticated,” he added.
Accordingto Tatang, an airport radar has an important function in regulating airtraffic. “Radars cannot be used 24 hours straight or it will malfunction,” hesaid.
Tatangsaid he did know for sure how long the radars in Indonesian airports have beenaround for, but there have not been any accidents due to radars.
Earlier, the radar at the Soekarno – Hatta International Airport was reported to havebeen malfunctioning often. It is 15 years old and its performance isproblematic.
