A Batavia Air Airbus A320 plane bound for Jakarta landed back at Sultan SyarifKasim II Airport in the Riau capital of Pekanbaru on Thursday evening due to asuspected engine problem, the company said Friday.
BataviaAir District Manager Zulkifli told Antara news agency that 137 of 186registered passengers were flown to Jakarta on Friday at 10 a.m. after an hourdelay using a substitute plane.
TheAirbus took a U-turn after two explosions were heard from the left wing of theaircraft, shortly after it took off at 6:55 p.m. local time on Thursday.
Pilotedby Capt. Muhammad Arfan, the plane hovered around Pekanbaru sky for about oneand a half hours to drain the fuel tank. Arfan said he took the decision tominimize the possibility of an accident during landing.
Zulkiflisaid passengers who agreed to stay overnight were given Rp 350,000 each tocover their hotel and local transportation fees.
Thecause of the blasts is being investigated.
