Spring Airlines and Juneyao Airlines, two low-cost carriers based in China, have launched services between Taipei and Shanghai.

The two carriers launched flights from Dec. 1, with Spring Airlines charging 199 yuan (US$32.65) one way and Juneyao Airlines 200 yuan (US$32.82). Both saw 90% takeup on their first day.

Spring Airlines CEO Wang Zhenghua said that of China's population of 1.3 billion, only 9 million have visited Taiwan so far and his company will bring more visitors to Taiwan for less. The company has set up an office in Taiwan.

Juneyao Airlines CEO Wang Junjin said, "Taiwan is a very nice place and we are willing to launch as many flights as we can, even five scheduled flights a day would not too many. We are going to increase our flights here, but we are going to wait till the governments of both sides relax regulations on air traffic."
